1. 카펜터스(Carpenters) 스토리
"에브리 샤랄랄라~~"
우리에게 아주 친숙한 구절이자 한국인이 가장 사랑하는 팝송 리스트에 절대로 빠지지 않는 노래를 불렀었던 팝 그룹 'The Carpenters(카펜터스)'를 소개합니다
카펜터스는 리처드 린 카펜터(Richard Lynn Carpenter. 키보드, 보컬)와 카렌 앤 카펜터(보컬, 드럼) 남매가 결성한 그룹이기는 한데 처음.부터 듀오 그룹은 아니었고 1965년 리처드의 친구 웨스 제이콥스(Wes Jacobs. 튜바, 베이스)와 함께 재즈 그룹 리처드 카펜터 트리오(The Richard Carpenter Trio)를 결성해 음악 활동을 시작했어요
이 그룹은 1966년, '배틀 오브 밴즈(Battle Of Bands)'에서 우승하고 곧바로 RCA 레코즈(RCA Records)와 계약하였습니다
이후 1967년 리처드와 카렌은 리처드의 친구 존 베티스(John Bettis. 기타) 등과 함께 6인조 밴드 '스펙트럼(Spectrum)'을 조직하였습니다
그렇게 이 팀은 향후 좋은 활약이 기대되었으나 1968년 돌연 해체되었고 잇달아 그해 웨스 제이콥스가 리처드 카펜터 트리오를 탈퇴함으로써 결과적으로는 남매 듀오 그룹 '카펜터스'로 남게 되었어요
1969년 카펜터스는 에이앤드엠 레코즈(A&M Records)와 계약해 듀오 데뷔 앨범 '오퍼링(Offering)'을 발표했는데 후에 '오퍼링'은 1970년 '티켓 투 라이드(Ticket To Ride)'라는 제목으로 재발매되었었죠
카펜터스는 미국 가수 리처드 체임벌린(Richard Chamberlain)의 원곡을 리메이크한 '(데이 롱 투 비) 클로우스 투 유((They Long To Be) Close To You)'(1970년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위) 등으로 주목을 받기 시작하더니 1971년에 열린 제13회 그래미 어워드에서는 '최우수 신인'으로 뽑히는 영광을 안았습니다
이후 '탑 오브 더 월드(Top Of The World)'(1973년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위), '온리 예스터데이(Only Yesterday)'(1975년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 4위), 캐나다 프로그레시브 록 그룹 클라투(Klaatu)의 원곡을 리메이크한 '콜링 아켜펀츠 오브 인터플래너테리 크래프트(Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft)'(1977년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 32위) 등으로 절정의 인기를 지속했습니다
그러나 1970년대 후반부터 카펜터스의 인기는 서서히 떨어지기 시작했는데 리처드는 수면제에 중독돼 입원 치료를 받았고 카렌은 신경성 식욕부진증(거식증)을 앓았다고 해요
1981년에는 새 앨범 '메이드 인 아메리카(Made In America)'를 발표하며 활동을 이어 갔지만 1983년 카렌이 거식증에 기인한 심장마비로 사망하는 바람에 이후 리처드는 카렌이 생전에 녹음해 두었던 미공개 노래들로 몇 편의 카펜터스 앨범을 발매했습니다
한편, 카펜터스는 카렌 카펜터의 청아한 목소리와 뛰어난 가창력으로 큰 사랑을 받았는데 부드러운 선율의 노래로 1970년대 미국 빌보드 어덜트 컨템퍼러리 차트에서 선전했구요
1987년 카렌 카펜터의 생애를 다룬 토드 헤인즈(Todd Haynes) 감독의 영화 '슈퍼스타: 더 카렌 카펜터 스토리(Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story)'가 만들어졌습니다
1994년에는 미국 록 밴드 소닉 유스(Sonic Youth), 아일랜드 록 밴드 크랜베리스(The Cranberries) 등이 참여한 트리뷰트 앨범 '이프 아이 워 어 카펜터(If I Were A Carpenter)'가 출시되기도 했습니다
카펜터스의 대표 앨범으로는 '클로우스 투 유(Close To You)'(1970년 미국 빌보드 앨범 차트 2위)가 꼽히고 있구요, 대표곡으로는 '(데이 롱 투 비) 클로우스 투 유', '예스터데이 원스 모어(Yesterday Once More)'(1973년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 2위), '톱 오브 더 월드', '플리즈 미스터 포스트맨(Please Mr. Postman)'(1975년 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위) 등이 있습니다
